Fitch Expects Slight Weakness  Mar 1st, 2013 

fitchFitch Ratings expects the recent pattern of easing U.S. auto loan underwriting standards to continue in 2013, and some further weakening in lender credit metrics will likely result. However, the trajectory of increased delinquencies and credit losses still appears modest and in line with its expectations.

Credit losses and delinquency rates ticked up modestly in the fourth quarter of 2012, largely as a result of seasonality. Loss rates were up by 28 basis points compared with the third quarter, while 30-day delinquency rates moved up by 63 basis points for auto lenders reviewed in the analysis.

For the three months ended Jan. 31, revenue, operating income and net income were $266.2 million, $62.8 million and $39.6 million, respectively. These represent an increase in revenue of $38.3 million, and decreases in operating income of $0.8 million, and in net income of $1 million, respectively, from the same quarter last year.

kelleyFor the month of February, Kelley Blue Book analysts predict new-car sales will maintain the momentum from the previous three months and hit 15.3 million seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR), a 3.4 percent year-over-year improvement.

Although shy of the 14 percent annual gain the auto industry experienced in January, sales should improve more than 7 percent after adjusting for the number of selling days in February.
